Ignacio (2014)
Ignacio es un hombre callado y retraído. Su mundo cambia cuando conoce a Daniella… Pero cuando la pierde, comienza su decenso a la locura…
I’ll say it right off the bat. This is one of my favorite productions. Our 5th short film, Ignacio, was born from an insane allegedly true story I was told about someone I used to know. Apparently this guy had an imaginary girlfriend and beat up his best friend for “sleeping with her”.
As disturbing as it sounded, I thought it sounded like an interesting story to explore and expand on. I started doing a bit of research on different conditions and behavior patterns and slowly fleshed out the character of Ignacio. I decided on that name since its shortened form is Nacho, and I wanted a nickname that would annoy someone who can’t live without a specific structure in their life.
This was my first short since 2012 working with an entirely new cast. As I had recently participated in an ill-fated production of Romeo and Juliet, I had a bunch of new super talented actors in my toy box and I decided to experiment with some of them. Joctan and Agatha were the perfect actors to bring these characters to life, and they absolutely brought their A-Game.
Despite some issues, from a production standpoint, this is probably the smoothest running production I’ve ever worked on. We had tons of time, proper equipment and a small, but very talented cast and crew who brought the best out of each other to make this such a positive experience. Hell, one of my favorite scenes to film was what I call the “Scooby Doo Scene”, where they’re chasing each other in the park. It was so silly and fun, it didn’t even feel like work.
This was also the first of my short films that was selected for both the Puerto Rico Horror Film Fest as well as the Rincón International Film Fest, which felt like quite the accomplishment!
As a special little extra, check out some of the pictures we used both in the short and on the poster (also included below). I’m pretty sure I still have Ignacio’s drawings stored somewhere, If I ever find them, I’ll make sure to post them!
